Russia has slipped to fifth place among steel-producing countries, behind India, the World Steel Association said.
Russia produced 5.6 million metric tons last month, while India made 5.7 million tons, World Steel said in a report on its website. The top three producers are China, Japan and the U.S.
Russian steelmakers, which overtook U.S. producers last year during the global recession, fell back behind their North American counterparts in the first half of 2010, shifting from third to fourth place among global producers.
In the first eight months of the year, Russia raised output to 43.9 million tons, 15 percent higher than a year earlier, while U.S. production jumped 56 percent to 54.5 million tons, World Steel said. India produced 44.6 million tons, up 8.3 percent.
Global steel output rose 22 percent to 932 million tons in the first eight months from a year earlier, World Steel said.
