A critical shortage of railway workers
has left BHP without enough train drivers to run at targeted iron ore
production rates, forcing tougher rosters on staff as labour constraints hamper
Australia’s ability to seize on record iron ore prices.
Australia’s biggest company is on a
collision course with the fly in, fly out (FIFO) workers who drive its iron ore
trains to port after telling them to work harder for longer to offset the high
turnover rates and high absentee levels that have plagued BHP’s flagship iron
ore division this year.
Despite the rise of automation over the
past decade, WA has a shortage of train and truck drivers.
