The US accepted the
request to investigate the additional duties of certain products that Turkey
imported from the US. The duties imposed by Turkey was responding to the US’
duties on imports of steel and aluminum products implemented last year.
The US considered that Turkey and other WTO members were pretending to follow
up WTO rules but taking blatant violation of these rules to damage the WTO. The
respond from Turkey was that the current situation was because the US'
unreasonable unilateral action to protect the US domestic producers from the
competitive effort of imports, and Turkey was forced to make reaction.
Last August, the US has doubled its tariff on Turkish imported steel without
any reason, and threatened to do the same on aluminum imports. The EU expressed
that Turkey and other members didn't violet the dispute resolution mechanism,
but the US abused the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
