USA -
world’s fourth-largest importer of ferrous scrap after Turkey, South Korea and
India has witnessed considerable fall of 19% M-o-M in Aug’18. As per recently
released customs data, United States imported 378,471 MT ferrous scrap in
Aug’18 as against 466,485 MT ferrous scrap imports recorded in Jul’18.
On
yearly premises, US imports edged up by 4% Y-o-Y as against 364,902 MT ferrous
scrap imports noted in Aug’17.

wise - Top unloading port in United States for scrap
import activities in August was Detroit (0.13 MnT) occupying highest 34% share.
Followed by other major ports like Seattle (0.06 MnT), Buffalo (0.04 MnT),
Charleston (0.04 MnT) and Pembina (0.02 MnT) occupying 16%, 11%, 11% and 5%
respectively.
Canada
remained the largest scrap supplier to United States in August -Canada
remained the largest supplier to US in August occupying 82% share. Canada
exported 308,454 MT, up 4% M-o-M as against 296,854 MT exports Jul’18. As per
reports, deliveries of HMS 1 and Shredded scrap from Canada fell however USA
imports of prime grade scrap increased in August.
Mexico
remained second largest exporter supplying 29,174 MT ferrous scrap, down 30% as
against 37,854 MT ferrous scrap in Aug’18. Netherland supplied 26,252 MT
ferrous scrap to USA followed by United Kingdom (10,503 MT) in Aug’18. UK
observed sharp fall of 77% as against 46,005 MT ferrous scrap exports last
month. While other prominent suppliers like Sweden, Spain and South Africa
witnessed nil scrap exports to US in Aug’18.
In
Aug'18, USA observed fall in Pig iron and DRI imports along with declined scrap
imports as domestic mill appetites were subdued on multiple planned maintenance
outages, ample inventories and limited buying on the strong belief that scrap
prices were on the cusp of a major correction.
US Pig
Iron imports recorded at 347,263 MT, down 35% M-o-M in Aug’18 as against
532,142 MT in Jul’18. While US imports of DRI declined by 30.2% M-o-M to
122,734 MT in August.
United
States scrap imports marginally up during Jan-Aug’18 - United
States imported 3.11 MnT ferrous scrap in during Jan-Aug’18, marginally up by
2% Y-o-Y as against 3.04 MnT during Jan-Aug’17. Increasing EAF outputs in US
are resulting in improving demand for high grade imported scrap and domestic
consumption in US as compared with last year. Crude steel production in United
States stood at 64.11 MnT Jan-Sept’18 as compared to 61.38 MnT recorded during
Jan-Sept’17.
