2017 is an important year for the Chinese steel
industry with deepened supply-side structural reform, further progress in
reducing excess capacity, and the beginning of de-leverage. The Chinese steel
market continues to recover and steel mills post steadily growing profits.
Looking into 2018, market fundamentals shall remain and strong performance of
the steel industry should be expected.
In line with the better than expected performance of
the steel industry, the coking industry is doing well . In 2017, China's coke production
decreased 3.3% yoy, reaching 431 million ton, and the coke export drastically
declined 20.71% to 8.1 million ton. China's coking coal production increased
0.28% to 445.57 million ton and consumption decreased 3.63% to 514.51 million
ton while the coking coal import increased 17.86% to 69.9 million ton due to
quality and price advantage.
With more and more stringent environmental protection regulations and measures,
how to realize a stable and healthy development and maintain profitability in
the fluctuating market, is more than ever a cardinal task for all coking
