Jordan Times reported that owners of local steel factories warned that their businesses could fall into a crisis if government authorities do not intervene to deal with the problems facing the sector.
During a press conference held recently at Jordan Chamber of Industry, they urged the government to stop exempting imported reinforced steel from customs and income tax.
They also asked that steel imports from the United Arab Emirates be suspended because it could dump the Jordanian market and adversely affect local factories.
Senator Mr Hatem Halwani who chaired the press conference, said that the problems were discussed with concerned officials but they have not taken any action to resolve them. Local steel factories provide jobs for around 7,000 workers.
